Marlys Joann (Schrader) Palan died in the presence of her loving children on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015, at the Powell hospital following an extended illness. She was 77.

Marlys Palan was born Nov. 23, 1937, in Faribault, Minn., to Lawrence and Margaret (Hutton) Schrader. 

She grew up on the family farm west of Dundas, Minn., attended District 97 country school and graduated from Northfield High School in 1955. Marlys went on to attend nursing school at Northwestern Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, Minn., and received her registered nurse’s license.

She married Bill Palan at St. Dominic’s Church in Northfield in 1959 and moved to Colorado where they both worked and raised their two sons Christopher and David. They moved to rural Deaver in 1975 and later divorced. 

Marlys moved to Powell from the family farm in 2003 and resided there until her death.  

Marlys enjoyed gardening, cooking, camping, traveling into the mountains and her beloved cat George. She was a devoted caretaker with a nursing career that spanned over 40 years.

Marlys is survived by sons Christopher Palan of Deaver and David Palan of Powell; step-granddaughters Janelle and Kimberly; sister Lois Stowe of Northfield, Minn.; special friends Patty and Mark Wurzel and their three daughters of Powell; many nieces, nephews, family and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Gerald Schrader, sister-in-law Virginia Schrader and daughter-in-law Lori Palan.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church in Powell.

Burial will be at a later date at Rolling Green Family Cemetery in Northfield, Minn.
