John Joseph Bessler

John Joseph Bessler died Friday, June 13, 2014, at the Powell Valley Care Center. He was 79.

He was born on Dec. 24, 1934, in Powell on the family’s Willwood homestead. The son of Felix and Nannie (Barton) Bessler, he was the sixth child born of the nine in their family. He graduated from Powell High School in 1953, and served in the Army from 1954-56. 

On Aug. 5, 1955, he married Barbara Hammack. Three children were born to their union, Barbara, Robert and Christina.

He was a member of the American Legion, and coached the women’s fast-pitch team for several years. He was also active in city league baseball and bowling.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Rosemary Bessler, Grace Sommers and Lucille Heny; brothers, Raymond Bessler, Felix Bessler, Hugo Bessler and Jim Bessler; his daughter, Christina Olson; and his son-in-law Darryl Olson.

He is survived by his wife Barbara (Hammack) Bessler; brother Fred (Sandy) Bessler; children Beverly (Zach) Deiss and Robert (Jolanta) Bessler; grandchildren Jodi (Mike) Arneson, Kelly (Heather) Deiss, Jessi (Tim) Poley, Beth L. Deiss, Barry (Brandy) Haskins, Brittany (Bryant) Hansen and Shane Bessler; great-grandchildren Nicole Arneson, Cole Arneson, Deacon Poley, Ember Poley, Brandon Haskins, Brody Haskins, and Brienna Haskins; great-great-grandson Trai Kyler Arneson; sisters-in-law Ida Bessler, Gerri Bessler, Janet Bessler and Janice Bessler; brothers-in-law Richard Heny and Bill Kupfer; and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be planned for a later date.

Thompson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
