Wayne R. Schaefer, 65, died peacefully at his home in Renton, Wash., with his family by his side on Saturday, May 10, 2014, after a long fight with gastric cancer.

Born on June 1, 1948, in Minot, N.D., to the late Edward and Bernice Schaefer, Wayne was the fourth of five siblings, Edward, Ronald, Shirley and Patricia.

After graduating from Powell High School, Wayne joined the Navy and served from 1966-69. Upon his return home he met Sherry Gail Chilson. They were married at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church in Powell on Feb. 7, 1970, and had son Barton John and daughter Tina Marie. They moved to Laramie, where he graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in industrial engineering.

Wayne proceeded to work all over the Western United States. The family lived in California, Texas, Montana, Utah and Wyoming before settling in Renton, Wash., in 1994.

Wayne was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to fish and golf. After retiring in 2011, he was able to spend more time with his family and friends. He had recently begun to do woodworking projects with his son and grandson.

Wayne was an amazing father and husband and a generous friend, brother and neighbor.

He is survived by his wife Sherry; brother Ronald; sisters Shirley and Patricia; son Bart; daughter Tina Ostlund and son-in-law Nicholas Ostlund; and two grandchildren, Jacob and Kelsey.

He was preceded in death by his brother Edward Schaefer in 2005.

Rosary and funeral Mass have taken place in Washington at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church, and he is buried at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash.
