West Matthews

West Matthews of Powell died Feb. 1, 2014. He was 62.

He was born and raised in Brentwood in west Los Angeles, Calif.

While growing up, he attended John Dye pre-school and Carlthorpe private school. West graduated from Palisades High School. After high school, he spent two years at Santa Monica City College.

During high school, he met a contractor who was developing 12 condominiums next door to where he lived, and he began working for him after school. West started learning the building trades when he was about 15 years old. He loved the work and became a master carpenter. He learned all aspects of the building trades. He later became a licensed building contractor with his own business, doing both residential and commercial work in Los Angeles.

He continued doing the work until the end of his life.

West was an exceptionally talented, fair and honest tradesman who took pride in his work. He always made sure his work was of the highest quality, safe and to his customers’ expectations.

West leaves behind his beloved son West C. Matthews Jr. of Powell and mother Marilyn M. Matthews of Los Angeles.

    Rest in Peace brother. You will be missed. Thank you for all your help, while I was deployed to Afghanistan.
