Helen Vorhies died on Saturday, June 15, 2013, in San Jose, Calif., surrounded by family after a brief illness. She was 85.

Helen was born in Powell on Sept. 9, 1927, to Ferdinand and Myrtle Burgener.

She attended school in Powell and graduated with the class of 1945 from Powell High School. She matriculated from the nursing program at St. Mary’s in Kansas City, Mo.

After earning her degree, Helen started her family in Powell and traveled throughout the United States, returning to Powell and Deaver for a few years in the 1970s. She eventually retired to San Jose, living with her daughter Jennifer where she had a lively social life and enjoyed several cruises.

Helen loved to tell stories about her many trips in between watching sports on TV, especially basketball and baseball.

Helen was preceded in death by her sister Lucille Shelby of San Martin, Calif.

She is survived by her brother Don Burgener of Nebraska; sister Lois Adey of Lovell; children Brenda Emmett, Jennifer Just, Patricia Emmett, Cheryl Rouse and Nathan Emmett, who all reside in San Jose, Calif., and Deaver. Helen is also survived by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who reside in Provo/Orem, Utah, and Powell: Amber and Spencer Allred and their four children; grandsons Jared, Justin, and Wesley Snell; and grandson Kyle and Sarah Snell and their daughter.

Private services have been held.
