Floyd William Schmitz, 73, died at home in Powell on Monday afternoon, April 29, 2013.

He was born on June 24, 1939 in Springfield, Minn., to Ralph Ignatius Schmitz and Loyola (Filzen) Schmitz. On Aug.

4, 1962, he married Marilyn Ann Hausauer in Ortonville, Minn. They lived in Powell for 22 years until Marilyn’s death in 2006. Floyd continued to live in Powell until his death.

Prior to living in Powell, Floyd lived in Great Falls, Mont., for four years while he served in the United States Air Force. After his service was over, he began his career with NCR (National Cash Register) which lasted 28 years. He and his family moved to Billings in 1967 and stayed there until moving to Powell in 1984.

Floyd was a man of strong character and many talents, including working on anything mechanical. He could fix anything and if he couldn’t fix it, he would just build a new one. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, tinkering in his garage and hunting. Most of all, he enjoyed anything he could do outside. He loved spending time at the family cabin in Nye, Mont., and the greatest enjoyment in his life was the time he spent with his children, grandchildren, extended family and numerous friends. He also was an active member of St. Barbara’s parish community.

Floyd was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, his parents, a daughter, Mary Beth and a brother, Denis and wife Mary.

He is survived by his son, John (Becky) Schmitz of Billings; daughters Lori (Jay) Foskett of Leavenworth, Kan., and Juli (Casey) Ewart of Powell; grandchildren Chelsie, Jayme, Makayla, Charlie and Jessie; great-granddaughter Emersyn; sisters Gladys (Richard) Feser of Comfry, Minn., Bonnie (Jim) Schumacher of Sleepy Eye, Minn.; brothers David (Linda) of Chanhassen, Minn., and Verne of Sidney, Mont., as well as many other extended family members.

A vigil for the deceased with the rosary recited will be held Thursday, May 2 at 7 p.m. at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church in Powell. Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, May 3 at 10 a.m., also at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church. Luncheon will follow in the parish center. Private burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Billings Saturday, May 4. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to St. Barbara’s Catholic Church.
