James O. Howell

James O. Howell died Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings after a sudden illness. He was 82.

Jim was born in Pingree, Idaho, on June 13, 1931 to Velma “Marie” (Beebe) and James V. Howell.

He graduated from high school in St. Maries, ID.

On May 26, 1984, James married Carole Gronczewski in Powell.

Jim worked as a cement contractor for more than 40 years until he was forced to retire at age 79 due to his health.

He served in the Korean War, retiring as a sergeant. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion, serving as post commander from 1989-90. He also served in the Honor Guard.

Jim was a patient teacher, an avid fisherman and gardener.

He also enjoyed barbecuing, playing cards and yardwork. He loved to spend time with friends and family.

A great practical joker, Jim was always ready with a joke and funny story.

Jim will be remembered as a loving, generous and kind man. He was a true friend to so many in the community and a father and father figure to many.

Jim will not be forgotten and leaves a huge hole in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his wife Carole; sister Delva; and Karen P. Edwards.

Jim is survived by his son Justin J. Howell of  Thaxton, Virginia; daughter Kimberly R. Howell of Whitehall, Mont.; stepson Greg Palmersheim of Fernie, B.C.; stepdaughter Denise Allen of Parker, Colo.; three grandchildren, Thomas Nerlin, Scott Nerlin and Ashley Parsons; and great-grandchild Robert A. Parsons; sisters Beebe Strite, Sharon Morris, and Donna Swenson.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 18 at the American Legion in Powell. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.

Memorials can be sent to the Powell Senior Center or the American Legion in Powell for a scholarship in Jim’s name.
