Vernon ‘R.D.’ Nielsen

Vernon “R.D.” Nielsen of Alva, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013 as the result of a logging accident. He was 61.

Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 at the Greater Hulett Community Center in Hulett. Burial followed at the Alva Cemetery.

Vernon was born Sept. 5, 1951 to Eldon R.D. and Betty (Hawley) Nielsen in Deadwood, S.D. He attended school in Crook County and graduated from Hulett High School. He married Barbara Bolin on Dec. 15, 1972. He worked in the oil fields in Belle Creek, Mont., from 1972 to 1986. Vernon then worked as a logger and farmer in the Alva area. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Nielsen of Alva; his children: Michelle (Lee) Nuss of Bozeman, Mont., Marcie (Mike) Hobbs of Powell, Megan (Pat) Lengerich of Madison, Ind., Cody (Michelle Hunt) Nielsen of Hulett, and Mandy (Nick) Ringler of Powell; nine grandchildren: Jordan and Ryan Nuss, Matthew and Morgan Hobbs, Jeremiah and Gabriella Lengerich and Kylie, Kamryn and Kaden Hammond; his mother, Betty Nielsen of Alva; three brothers: George (Pat) Sherrard of Sioux Falls, S.D., Jerry Nielsen of Casper and Marvin Nielsen of Alva; one sister, Bonnie (Ken) Anderson of Powell; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arrangements were under the care of Fidler-Roberts & Isburg Funeral Chapel of Sundance.
