Richard Charles Thorne of Deaver and Whitehall, Mont., died Jan. 2, 2013, in Deaver.
He was born Aug. 20, 1954, in Seattle, to Charles Edward and Billie Joyce (White) Thorne. He received a bachelor’s of science in chemistry and doctor of medicine degree from the University of South Dakota.
He married Nina Madeline Minorsky on Aug. 8, 2007, in Butte.
He previously lived in Orange City, Iowa, Glendive, Mont., Kellogg, Idaho and Whitehall, Mont.
Dr. Thorne worked as an emergency department physician at Powell Valley Healthcare in Powell, and at one time was director of the emergency department in St. James Healthcare in Butte.
His church affiliation was Pastafarian. He was a pilot and liked hunting, fishing, camping, skiing, scuba diving, rocketry, writing and traveling. He held a chemistry award from the University of South Dakota.
Survivors include his parents Billie Bymers and Marvin Bymers of Cody; spouse Nina Thorne; former wife Jan Olson Thorne of Whitehall; sons Douglas Thorne of Whitehall, James Thorne of Tempe, Ariz., and Walker Hobbs of Deaver; daughters and son-in-law, Sandra and John Einan of Great Falls; and Helen Hobbs of Corvallis, Ore.; brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Brenda Thorne of Suffolk, Va., Tom and Kris Thorne of Gillette; sisters and brother-in-law, Linda and Gerard Baumstarck of Cody; nieces and nephew, Anne Thorne, Michael Thorne and wife Del, Katie and husband Matthew Bennington, Tiffany Thorne and Cynthia Baumstarck.
Richard was happiest when he was surrounded by his family. They brought him tremendous joy and they could count on his love unconditionally. His sense of humor and positive outlook to life enveloped them. He was a life-energy in himself, embracing new ideas and studied with passion and enthusiasm, whether this involved flying, poker, researching topics for his book, scuba diving, rocketry, bungie jumping, keeping up with scientific advances or listening to music from around the world.
He was a respected colleague in the emergency room in Powell and as director of the emergency department in St. James Healthcare in Butte. Richard was a unique and loving man, and he will be missed by all who knew him. Fair winds, calm seas and smooth sailing.
Memorial services were held Monday, Jan. 7 at the First United Methodist Church in Powell.
