Peggy June Adams Shreve died peacefully on Oct. 27, 2012 in Cody. She was 85.

Peggy was born in Spencer, W. Va., on July 23, 1927. After losing her parents at an early age, she was raised by her aunt and uncle in Glenville, W. Va., where she graduated from Glenville High School in 1945 and graduated from Glenville State College with a degree in education in 1948. After graduating from college, she taught school for two years in West Virginia, for two years in Virginia and for 16 years in Cody.

Peggy married Don Franklin Shreve in June of 1951, but was widowed in September 1970.

Peggy June Adams Shreve has the legacy of being the first and only woman from Park County to be elected to the Wyoming Legislature in 1978, where she served for 20 years. Her political career encompassed chairwoman of Travel, Recreation (both state and national), Wildlife and Cultural Resources (12 years), chairman Joint House and Senate Travel, Recreation, Wildlife and Cultural Resources (10 years), vice chairman and chairman of the Arts, Tourism and Cultural Heritage Committee of the National Conference of State Legislatures AOL, delegate to the National Republican 1980 Convention, chairman of the Five State Conference (North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming for 1992-1993), majority whip for 1992-1994, speaker pro tem for 1995-1998, member of Rules and Procedure Committee and Management Council and co-chair of School Finance Committee. Other committees to which she was appointed were the Blue Ribbon Committee on Tourism and Task Force Committee on Education; Transportation and Highways; and Corporations and Political Subdivisions.

In addition to her strong commitment to the State of Wyoming, she had a dedication to being involved in the civic organizations of the communities where she lived. These organizations include the Girl Scout Council in Greenbrier County, W. Va. (1963-1966), treasurer of Park County Republican Party 1976, volunteer at Park County Hospital, Girls State leader 1985-1992, Elder First Presbyterian Church, Past President Classroom of Teachers, Executive Board of Buffalo Bill Information Center, Boys and Girls Club of America board member and a Big Brothers-Sisters board member.

During her lifetime, Peggy was honored for the many facets of her work in the political, civic and educational arenas in which she was a member. These honors include Educational Woman of the Year 1985, Women Helping Women 1986, Legislator of the Year by the Outfitting Industry 1989, Wyoming State Public Official of the Year 1990 and Alumna of the Year Glenville State College 1994. Additionally, the multipurpose building on the North Fork Highway in Cody was named Shreve Lodge in honor of her work and dedication to the State of Wyoming. She is also credited with the creation of “Peg’s Potties” and “Shreve’s Stripes” which have assisted many motorists traveling south from Park County.

Peggy’s many civic clubs and organizations included being past president of the PEO, AO for two years, a past member of the Executive Board AAUW, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (vice chair for two terms), vice president and county committeewoman for Park County Republican Women, State Convention Chair for PEO 1995 and the Red Hatters Church Circle.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Donna (John Douglas) Nathlar-Shirley of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Jennifer (Zane Sheldon) Adams Nevins of Wheatland, John Clyde Shreve of Cody and Don (Sheri) Franklin Shreve, Jr., of Cody; six grandchildren: Robert Michael Stoll and Barton Lee Stoll of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Derek Zane Nevins of Cheyenne, Kellie Rebecca Zahller of Saint Louis, Mo. and Abigale Jones Shreve and Parker Maxwell Shreve of Cody. Peggy is also survived by five great-grandchildren.
