Joan Arnett, 77, formerly of Cody, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, at Berkley Manor Care Facility in Denver.

She was born Joan Louise Reed on Dec. 25, 1934, in St. Louis, Mo., to Charles and Gwendolyn (Henderson) Reed. The family moved to Wyoming in September 1949. The Reed family had many businesses in the Powell area, including The Dutch Mill, Southside Grocery, The Foodland Grocery and Reed’s Market.

Joan married F. Hugh Arnett on June 12, 1964. Joan lived her life mainly in the Big Horn Basin and worked in both Powell and Cody, specifically at Powell Valley Hospital, West Park Hospital, Cody Senior Center, Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Wal-Mart, Park County School District and other local businesses. Joan prided herself on being a good cook to many members of the community and to travelers alike.

Joan and Hugh adopted their daughter Crystal in October 1977. Joan loved her husband and daughter very much. Hugh died from cancer on Sept. 14, 2005 and Joan cared for Hugh at home until his death. 

Joan enjoyed spending time with friends and family and traveling. Joan moved to Denver in November 2011 to be closer to her daughter.

Survivors include Joan’s daughter, Crystal Arnett of Denver; brother, Charles Reed (Myrtle) of Olympia, Wash.; sister Judy McDonald of Olympia, Wash.; one niece and four nephews, and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents Charles in 1969 and Gwendolyn in 1998; and her husband, Hugh.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at Penrose Cemetery outside Powell.

Memorials to Park County Humane Society would be appreciated by the family in Joan’s name. 

Arrangements are under direction of Ballard Funeral Home in Cody.
