The Powell Panthers volleyball team went 5-2 but failed to place after getting off to a promising start at the Mont./Wyo. Border War in Powell Friday and Saturday.

The Northwest Trappers volleyball team won the first set against the No.1-ranked squad in the nation but lost back-to-back matches for the first time this season in Rock Springs this past weekend.

The Trappers (5-5) were swept by the New Mexico Military Institute 23-25, 23-25, 14-25 Friday and then lost in four sets to No. 1 Western Nebraska Community College 25-23, 17-25, 19-25, 14-25 Saturday.

The hometown heroes and consensus preseason Class 3A favorite Powell Panthers looked to be in championship form in their home opening blowout of the Custer County Cowboys Saturday night.

The Northwest College men’s soccer team is 2-2 to start the season despite playing with a depleted squad.

The Trappers beat Dodge City (Nebraska) 1-0 at home Aug. 23 and Chemeketa (Salem, Ore.) by the same 1-0 score in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho Aug. 31.

The Powell High School girls’ swimming and diving team will look to make a splash at state this year with one of the deepest squads in recent memory.

A fire burning near the Beartooth Highway south of Red Lodge, Mont., has rerouted the Cycle Greater Yellowstone bicycle tour.

Teamwork key as 2013-14 season starts

For the second year in a row the Northwest Trappers volleyball team will require the support of its freshmen to carry it to the Region IX Tournament and beyond.

Of the nine freshmen on the 2012-13 roster, only five have returned to the lineup as sophomores this season. Head coach Shaun Pohlman said it’s not an ideal situation, but one that can still yield successful results.

I really should be a lot better at golf.

I’m sure a lot of people share this thought, and I’m sure most of them are wrong. But, really, I can’t be this bad.

All six Powell High School fall sports teams will start practicing for the upcoming season next week.

Football, tennis, golf, girls swimming, volleyball and cross country will all begin their official practice season Monday. Each sport must complete a required amount of practice days before it can engage in competition, said PHS Activities Director Tim Wormald. Football must finish 10 practices, golf only three and the remaining fall sports must practice for nine days.
