Ouellette, Katz named to Class 3A All-State team

The Powell High School boys’ soccer team finished fourth at the Class 3A state tournament to place higher than any soccer team in PHS history.

PHS head coach Travis Rapp downplayed the accomplishment, which he said is a good sign for Powell soccer.

The PHS girls’ soccer team again extended its season in improbable fashion but ultimately was eliminated in two games at the Class 3A state tournament in Jackson over the weekend.

The Panthers (7-12, 2-2 Northwest) lost 3-0 to Buffalo in the first round Thursday and then 3-2 (5-4) in a consolation round game with Cody on Friday that was decided by a shootout.

It hasn’t worked out. Yet.

Brett Smith’s initial foray into the NFL has been a failure, but that doesn’t mean his decision to leave college a year early was wrong.

University of Wyoming fans were disappointed when the former Cowboys’ quarterback was overlooked during three days and seven rounds of the NFL draft, but were given reason to celebrate when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Smith as an undrafted free agent shortly after the final pick was made.

2011 PHS grad grateful for community’s support

Just five days after former Powell High School track star Kyle Sullivan won the Mountain West Conference’s decathlon title, he had one thing on his mind.

“I just want to go out and do it again,” Sullivan said in an interview with the Tribune.

The Cubs boys and girls traveled to Lovell for the conference track meet on May 10  and then to Riverton on May 13 for the Best of the Best meet.

Lander originally was scheduled to host the Best of the Best, but weather moved the meet to Riverton.

The Powell High School boys’ soccer team is a healthy first-round favorite as the Class 3A State Tournament begins today (Thursday) in Jackson.

The Panthers open at 9 a.m. with a match against Pinedale for the third time this season.

Powell is 2-0 against the Wranglers after beating them 7-0 in the season opener March 22 and again 5-2 on the road May 3.

The Powell High School track and field teams will count on a deep and diverse group of athletes as the Panthers seek state glory this weekend in Casper.

The Panthers are the only team in Class 3A to have an athlete qualify in every event at the state meet.

Defense will be key to success in Jackson

When the Powell girls kick off their first-round match of the Class 3A State Soccer Tournament at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) they will be facing a daunting, but not unbeatable, opponent.

Powell’s Sullivan wins conference decathlon title

LARAMIE — Powell native and UW junior Kyle Sullivan won the decathlon and the University of Wyoming track and field teams had a historic 2014 Mountain West Outdoor Championships last week in Laramie.

Team awaits return of three starters

An undermanned and inexperienced Powell Pioneers team was no match for the Sheridan Troopers in Sunday’s season-opening doubleheader.

Powell, playing without at least three starters, lost 12-5 and 12-2 against the AA Troopers.
