A 9-year-old Utah boy apparently died in the South Fork of the Shoshone River on Monday after being thrown into the water by a horse.

Commission cites ‘extreme’ fire danger

Fireworks, controlled burns of agricultural fields and other open fires are banned on many Park County lands until further notice.

The Park County Commission unanimously passed a resolution at its Tuesday meeting restricting the use of fire on “unimproved” land in Park County due to “extreme” fire danger.

County likely to adopt fire restrictions starting July 5

Park County will likely restrict fires on private land following the July 4 holiday, and officials are urging folks to be extremely careful about using any fireworks over the holiday, given the high fire danger.

In Park County, fireworks are only legal to use if deployed on private property outside of city limits with the landowner’s permission, said Deputy County Fire Warden Sam Wilde.

A Park County man has been charged in federal court with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Christopher L. Swartwood, 34, made his initial appearance on the felony charge in a U.S. district courtroom in Lander on Wednesday, said John Powell, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Wyoming.

Federal agents with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms arrested Swartwood around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday following a search of his South Fork home on Bartlett Lane, said Park County Sheriff Scott Steward.
