Continuing efforts to bring the Park County Fairgrounds’ electric grid up to date, county commissioners are planning to bid out some $218,000 worth of work to the complex.

Following a review by a state electrical inspector, the fair board and county commission learned last spring that the grounds had a number of electrical code violations. The most serious issues — those deemed a threat to public safety — had to be addressed prior to the opening of the 2010 fair. That work came at a cost of roughly $99,000.

A former member of the Powell Volunteer Fire Department has been sentenced to serve three and a half to five years in prison for downloading child pornography on a fire department computer in late 2009.

On Wednesday, 44-year-old Dwayne “Doug” Leichner pleaded no contest to five felony counts of possession of child pornography and received the prison sentence from Park County District Court Judge Steven Cranfill. Leichner must also pay $835 in crime victim compensation and fees as part of his sentence.

Inaccurate, anonymous flyer mailed throughout the Big Horn Basin

A Cody doctor was disparaged in an anonymous mass mailing last week, and evidence indicates the letter is primarily made up of falsehoods.

The flyer, mailed to a substantial number of residents across Park County and the Big Horn Basin, purports to have been written and sent by a dissatisfied patient of Dr. Jimmie Biles, an orthopaedic surgeon based out of Cody.

A long weekend trip to face Class 3A West conference opponents Pinedale and Jackson proved fruitful for the Powell High School girls basketball team.

The Lady Panthers (3-2 overall, 2-0 in conference play) took down Pinedale 32-21 Friday and beat Jackson’s Lady Broncs 47-40 on Saturday.

“All in all, a good weekend for the Lady Panthers,” said PHS head coach Luke Danforth.
