Police say a 62-year-old Cody resident shot another man in the upper body before killing himself Friday night in Cody.

Cody police say John Tully shot through the window of his ex-girlfriend’s home around 11 p.m., hitting 53-year-old Larry Jansma.

If a transfer station is constructed in Powell, it won’t require any money from Park County.

That’s the message city of Powell officials stressed to county commissioners at a meeting discussing landfills last week. Officials with the city of Cody and the town of Meeteetse also attended the discussion at Yellowstone Regional Airport.

Governor makes case for data centers

Saying it’s time for the state to be bold, Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead said he wants to distribute more money to local governments, fund highway improvements and attract new businesses to the state.

“We’re going to have to do things differently than we have in the past,” Mead said in a Friday speech to the Wyoming Press Association.

A former Powell resident has been barred from owning any cats or other animals in connection with a summer hoarding case where officials seized 157 cats from a rural Powell home.

Last Tuesday, Maurielena “Mimi” Nesbit pleaded guilty to 14 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty in Park County’s Circuit Court. As part of a plea agreement, another three counts of cruelty were dismissed.

The Powell High School girls basketball team was edged out by one of the conference’s top teams on Friday, falling 41-38 to the visiting Mountain View Lady Buffaloes.

The Wyoming Supreme Court has upheld the 18- to 20-year prison sentence given to a Cody man who opened fire in the Walmart parking lot three years ago.

In a decision last week, the Supreme Court affirmed Park County District Court Judge Steven Cranfill's finding that Chester Darral Fletcher was competent to stand trial and be sentenced for his actions.

On Friday, Powell Valley Recycling officials received word from the U.S. Department of Argiculture that they have received $195,000 in funding to help move the group into a new facility.

A Utah man has been sentenced to serve 18 to 20 years in prison for stealing items out of two Powell vehicles last year and crashing a stolen van.

Jeramie J.E. Large, a Salt Lake City-area resident, received the sentence last week from District Court Judge Steven Cranfill. It was the maximum sentence allowed by law.
