Vietnam War pen pals meet

U.S. soldier Stanley Weldon Holmes Jr. was waiting to begin an R&R leave at the Denang, Vietnam, airport when he happened to pick up a pocket-sized Western that would change his life.

It wasn’t the words of author Louis L’Amour that stuck with him — today, Holmes can't even recall what book it was — but more than 40 years later, he still remembers the request for a pen pal on the back cover from Marilyn Thull, Star Route, Belfry, Mont.

“I never forgot this name in the back of the book. I could always see that,” Holmes recalls.

Occupiers lobby for reform

Some 2,100 miles away from the “Occupy Wall Street” protest in Zuccotti Park, a group of area residents came together in Powell’s Washington Park on Saturday to join the protest against corporate power and stump for other causes.

After a bit of “road rage,” Park County is moving to further improve a private subdivision road near Wapiti.

Troubled developer ordered to pay up

Former Montana realtor never paid back investments

A former Red Lodge, Mont., developer has been ordered to pay more than $368,000 to two Powell couples who, according to court findings, were defrauded by her.

The city of Powell didn’t have to look far for its new police chief.

Powell Police Sgt. Roy Eckerdt was informed on Monday afternoon that he would be the department’s new chief come January.

Cody equestrian center pitched

A proposed Cody equestrian center found support last week with a group of around 50 people involved with horse and youth activities.

A 34-year-old man was killed by a Cody police officer Tuesday night after a domestic dispute escalated and he began firing shots in the direction of officers, police say.

Cody police were summoned to Jared Christen’s home in the 1100 block of River View Drive shortly after 10 p.m. for a domestic disturbance.

Chief says attack wasn’t random

Police are investigating the brutal assault of a Powell man at his South Clark Street home on early Tuesday morning.

Search continuing for missing hiker

Searchers continued to look for a missing hiker in the Clarks Fork Canyon area on Monday as a week of searching has turned up no clear sign of where he is.

Jason Shefelbine, 32, of Billings, has been missing since Saturday, Oct. 1, when he went on a day hike in the area.
