PHS tennis teams head to regionals

Powell High School’s tennis teams will be looking to avenge some earlier matches at this weekend’s regional tournament in Gillette.

“We’re looking for some stories — some people who beat people who they’ve lost to,” said PHS head coach Ray Bieber. “We’re certainly capable and we’ve gained a lot of experience and we’ve improved a lot, so we’ve just got to make it happen.”

Cody bests Powell in first matchup

Despite several close matches, Powell High School’s tennis squads took just one win from Cody last week.

The Broncs swept Powell 5-0, while the Fillies took four of five matches at PHS on Thursday. PHS head coach Ray Bieber had said the matchup with Cody — “They’re very well-coached, just an excellent team” — would tell the Panthers and Lady Panthers where they stood.

Four people received enough votes in the Aug. 21 primary election to run for mayor against Powell City Councilman Don Hillman in the general election. None of them will run against him.

Hillman was the only candidate to file for Powell mayor last spring, but the Nov. 6 general election ballot has two potential ballot slots — meaning someone could have taken that second position via write-in votes.

An elderly Powell woman reportedly forced several cars off the road with erratic driving on Friday, the incident ending after she crashed into a Wyoming Highway Patrol vehicle outside Cody.

“She appeared to be really confused and possibly suffering from some medical issues,” said Park County Sheriff Scott Steward.
