Four people received enough votes in the Aug. 21 primary election to run for mayor against Powell City Councilman Don Hillman in the general election. None of them will run against him.

Hillman was the only candidate to file for Powell mayor last spring, but the Nov. 6 general election ballot has two potential ballot slots — meaning someone could have taken that second position via write-in votes.

An elderly Powell woman reportedly forced several cars off the road with erratic driving on Friday, the incident ending after she crashed into a Wyoming Highway Patrol vehicle outside Cody.

“She appeared to be really confused and possibly suffering from some medical issues,” said Park County Sheriff Scott Steward.

Tennis squads do the splits

Powell High School’s tennis squads got their fall seasons rolling this weekend with some wins.

The PHS boys claimed a 4-1 win in Green River on Friday, then beat Rock Springs 3-2. On the girls side, the Lady Panthers took a 5-0 decision over Green River before being edged 3-2 by an experienced Rock Springs team.

No write-in candidates qualify for commission race

Powell City Councilman Don Hillman may very well have an opponent in the race for mayor of Powell.

Four individuals received the three or more write-in votes needed to qualify for the Nov. 6 general election ballot as a mayoral candidate, Park County Clerk Jerri Torczon said Thursday morning. However, the man with the most write-ins has no interest in running.

Powell support not enough for Wetzel and Laursen

North Fork outfitter Lee Livingston and incumbent Bucky Hall emerged as the winners in Tuesday’s Republican primary, coming out at the top of a seven-man race.

Livingston, who received 2,755 votes to lead the field, and Hall, who garnered 2,169 votes, each polled very strongly in western Park County.

Voter turnout down from 2010

Park County voters didn’t exactly turn out in droves to weigh in on the most contested Republican primary races that the county has had in decades.

Unofficial election results showed that 6,941 voters cast ballots on Tuesday, which would mean about half of the county’s 13,419 registered voters turned out.

Reasons not clear

A former Powell police officer has been arrested on a warrant, and law enforcement and court officials will not say why.

Information posted to the Park County Sheriff’s Office website over the weekend listed 39-year-old Kirk Chapman as having been arrested Friday at the Park County Courthouse and included a booking photo.

Today is Election Day

It’s “only” the Primary Election, but many local races will be shaped — if not outright determined — by today’s results.

A hike up Heart Mountain has always provided participants a chance to get a deeper understanding of their personal physical fitness. But a new interpretative cabin installed at the trailhead now offers mountain visitors an opportunity for a deeper understanding of the place itself.

Girls team takes 2nd at first tourney

Class 3A state golf champion Bowen Prestwich wasted no time in picking up where he left off last fall. The Powell High School senior posted a three-over par two-day total in Riverton last week to claim top individual honors at the Riverton Country Club.

Prestwich parred the final hole to hold off three challengers by a single stroke.
