July 18, 2014, was a day Powell, its residents, its high school and its football team will long remember.

Less than four months after Powell High School football won its third consecutive state title, the Panther wrestling team matched that accolade with its own back-to-back-to-back performance.

In his junior campaign, Powell High School swimmer Ben Wetzel etched his place in the Panther swimming record book. Wetzel claimed the Class 3A state title in the 500 freestyle on March 1 in Gillette, shattering his school’s record (Jory Turk, 5:07.98 in 1988) with a time of 5:00.47.

The year began on a grim note when a Cody duck hunter and his son came upon a headless body in Badger Basin on Jan. 9.

Local voters didn’t clean house in 2014, but they made a few notable changes.

On July 1, the first truckload of Powell garbage headed to Billings, ending a years-long debate over what to do with municipal solid waste.
