A Cody man is in jail after allegedly leading police on a chase and firing a shot at officers on Saturday night.
Derek E. Hill, 25, was arrested Sunday and will make his first court appearance Tuesday on what police say should be multiple felony counts.
People doing some recreational shooting at the Red Lake area southwest of Cody had reported a man videotaping them, pointing a rifle at them and following them around 9 p.m. on Saturday, Park County Sheriff Scott Steward said in a news release.
Cody police officers found the man's vehicle in the city, but when they attempted to perform a traffic stop, the driver fled.
Cody police and a Park County sheriff's deputy pursued the man back to the Red Lake area, where his vehicle died, Steward said. At that point, the man -- alleged to be Hill due to later investigation -- exited the vehicle and fired a shot from a rifle towards the officers, Steward said. He kept firing as he fled into a hilly area, Steward said.
The sheriff's special response group responded, but Hill wasn't located that night. He was arrested at his Cody home late Sunday morning on suspicion of multiple felony charges, Steward said.
Jail records show Hill is being held on suspicion of three counts of aggravated assault and battery and a count of evading police.
