Record crop of sugar beets being processed at Lovell factory
Western Sugar officials plan to finish delivering sugar beets to the Lovell factory in the first part of March.
Randall Jobman of Western Sugar Cooperative said the rehaul of beets from receiving stations in the Lovell factory district, which includes Powell, took longer after the record 2011 harvest. Now only a few weeks remain of taking beets to the factory.
“We just had a big crop,” Jobman said.
The Lovell district yield averaged 28.9 tons of sugar beets per acre, “which is extremely good. The highest ever,” he said.
Beets stored at receiving stations since the harvest wrapped up in the fall are in good condition, Jobman said. Growers deliver the beets to receiving stations, where they are stored until they can be trucked to the factory.
The Lovell factory will process sugar beets 24 hours per day until the campaign concludes. Jobman said the growers will be paid for the crop according to the schedule determined by their contracts with the company.
“The prices that the farmers are receiving are excellent,” he said.
