Westside Elementary School, stadium nearly ready for use

Westside school students are scheduled to move into their new building in January, and the project is on track to be ready for them.

Construction is complete, with only a few punch list items left to be addressed, Todd Wilder said last week. Wilder is coordinator of support services for Park County School District No. 1.

Installation of furniture and equipment was to begin this week, and Wilder said that should be completed in about three weeks.

At Powell Middle School, construction of a multipurpose room that will, among other uses, provide practice space for the middle school wrestling team, is complete except for replacing some temporary windows, Wilder said.

“Otherwise, it’s ready to go,” Wilder said.

Construction continues on phase 1 of the project to provide a lunchroom and other classroom space at Powell Middle School. Completion of the project will replace classroom space lost with the demolition of the old auditorium, and it will allow the school to abandon the lunchroom in the old high school building, preparing for the old high school’s demolition.

Wilder said funding is in place for the demolition project, which will remove the multi-story portion of the building as well as the old lunchroom. He said the demolition is expected to be carried out next summer.

The print shop at the south end of the building will be preserved, as will the shop area, which will be converted to warehouse space, including food storage for the school lunch program.

Next week, district and state officials will meet to restart design work on phase 2 of the middle school project. Wilder said there is no projected date for beginning construction on the project.

Wilder said the new Powell High School stadium is nearing completion. A necessary remodel of the field house is in progress, and wiring in the press box is yet to be completed. The sound system is “on the way from Florida,” Wilder said, and its installation will be bid separately. He expects a local contractor will do the installation.
