Ten years Later: 9/11 remembered Sunday

Posted

Lest We Forget,” a ceremony to remember Sept. 11, 2001, will take place at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Powell Fire Department on East South Street.

Like millions of Americans, members of the Powell Volunteer Fire Department were glued to the TV at the Powell Fire Hall.

“When we watched that building collapse, we wondered how many hundreds of firemen died,” said Powell Fire Chief Joey Darrah.

The local fire department is a fitting place for a service, considering 343 New York City firefighters died trying to save lives in the Twin Towers, according to the New York City Fire Department.

Firefighters are a unique breed.

“We’re going into buildings when everybody else is running out,” Darrah said. “We knew those guys were doing that.”

In the heartbreaking days following 9/11, Powell firefighters, like Americans across the country, wanted to help. Powell firefighters placed jars around town and raised nearly $8,000 for families who lost firefighters in the Twin Towers, Darrah said.

Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served Sunday from 4:30-6 p.m. followed by the memorial service.

Music will include “Amazing Grace” by Brad Logan on bagpipes and the “Star Spangled Banner” with Caroline Kost singing solo.

The Buffalo Bill Young Marines will post the colors.

Allen Cooper will perform a song he wrote for the occasion, and Dave Bonner will act as master of ceremonies.

Cmdr. Ron Miller of American Legion Post 26 and Cmdr. Don Meschke of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5054 will speak.

U.S. Marine and Post 26 Chaplain Joe Mooney will give special recognition to Shane Childers, who died in battle in 2003.

Middle East veterans will be honored.

Darrah and his daughter, Josie, will read a poem.

Jim Cannon of Powell Valley Healthcare and Powell police officer and Iraq veteran Chad Glick will pay special recognition to emergency responders.

Powell Mayor Scott Mangold will read a 9/11 proclamation.

Powell Fire Department will re-enact the Flag Raising and conduct the Striking of the Four Fives, the traditional firemen’s memorial.

The laying of the wreath will follow.

American Legion Post 26 will recognize America’s 11 major conflicts.

Powell Veterans Honor Guard will fire a rifle salute, and Tom Bibbey will play “Taps.”

Following a benediction, Logan and Kost will lead those in attendance with “God Bless America.”

Freedom Memorial dedication set

The dedication of the Freedom Memorial, the last memorial at the Wyoming Veterans Memorial Park, will take place during a ceremony commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11, at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, in Cody.

The Freedom Memorial honors the sacrifices of those who have died in military service in the various military conflicts since the Vietnam War. It consists of a central large monument with spokes radiating to obelisks representing the major conflicts since the Vietnam War.

The large monument lists the names of those who died in military service from combat, accidental, illness, or other causes of death. The memorial was designed to incorporate expansions, if needed.

Speakers at the dedication will include Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead, Maj. Gen. Luke Reiner, Wyoming’s adjutant general, Cody Mayor Nancy Tia Brown and U.S. Sen. John Barrasso.

To submit a name for the memorial, contact the Wyoming Veterans Memorial Museum, 307-472-1857.
