Chapman's Dodge Caravan had broken down in a local driveway earlier, Steward said. The resident recognized the man from a news report and reported the incident to the sheriff's office, Steward said.
Sheriff's deputies arrested Chapman at the Newton Creek Campground after spotting his vehicle around 3:15 p.m. Chapman was carrying a 10-inch knife in his back pocket and had three firearms in his vehicle, but he was taken into custody without incident, Steward said.
The Exeter, Mo., resident is wanted on a Barry County, Mo., felony warrant for parental kidnapping and is awaiting an extradition hearing in the Park County Detention Center. Chapman is alleged to have picked up his two young girls, 7-year-old Abby and 3-year-old Isabella, at his wife's house on July 10 and then leaving the area without telling his wife, according to the local Cassville Democrat.
The two children have been taken into protective custody, Steward said.
