Cardwell donates $100,000 for OB improvements

Plans forming to renovate the Obstetrics Department at Powell Valley Hospital got a big boost recently through a $100,000 donation to the Powell Medical Foundation from Paul Cardwell, who came out of early retirement to take his position as chief executive officer at Powell Valley Healthcare earlier this year.

Cardwell said the one-time gift will go toward a maternity and family center at the hospital. He will determine whether additional money is available at the end of the tax year, he said.

“When I came back to work, I was going to try to find a worthy charity to receive my annual salary,” he said.

Cardwell said he found that charity when he learned more about the hospital’s need for two obstetrician/gynecology specialists and for expanded and updated OB facilities at the hospital.

Cardwell said he envisions suite-like accommodations where families can join mothers during labor, delivery, recovery and post partum.

He said only one of the rooms in the OB Department currently has adequate space to accommodate young mothers’ expectations to be with their families, have their child and recover, all in the same room.

What that facility would look like, and how it might be accomplished, is in the beginning planning stages, he said.

Diane DeLozier, executive director of the Powell Medical Foundation, said, “I think there are definitely some plans in place for Powell Valley Healthcare, and I think Paul Cardwell has demonstrated his commitment to that process.”

DeLozier said Cardwell’s donation will remain with the foundation until construction begins on the project.

“Because we’re in such early stages with the project, it wasn’t something that was going public right away,” she said.

Thanks to Cardwell and others in the area who remain committed to quality health care, “The future looks pretty bright,” she said. “We are all on the same page here; we’re all working for health care.

“Paul has obviously committed his career to it, and he has committed his personal dollars to it, too.”
