Kids catch colossal trout at Homesteader park Saturday
At the 25th annual Kids’ Fishing Day at Homesteader Park Pond Saturday, youngsters caught huge rainbow trout.
One man carried his kids’ stringer containing eight fat trout, with one measuring close to 18 inches.
The trout are the biggest he had seen at the pond, said Bud Gates, of Powell, as he observed his grandson, Kolby Gates, 3, pulling in a monster.
Kolby’s dad, Brandon Gates, was coaching his son, who left with a catch he could barely carry.
Fishing the pond is a Gates family tradition. When Brandon was a boy, he would fish the pond all day with his friends, Bud said.
Beginning June 6, the pond is open to all ages from 7 a.m. to dusk, all summer.
For Saturday’s free fishing day, 115 people signed up to bring their kids out for one-hour time slots at the pond.
Shelby Saldana, 16, of Powell reeled her line in like a pro. In the water next to her were three nice rainbows.
Lauren DeWitz, 9, of Powell landed a nice trout.
“It’s my first time fishing,” Lauren said.
It was a fine morning. The emerald water was smooth as polished glass, and the sky was partly cloudy and warm. Proud parents, grandparents and their offspring left the park with plenty of trout for their frying pans.
