A 21-year-old Lovell man is being held on $30,000 cash bail while he awaits further proceedings on a charge that he stabbed another young man in the hand last December.
After several months at large, Raymond Ortiz was arrested out of state earlier this month on a Park County warrant for aggravated assault and battery.
Ortiz was booked into the Park County Detention Center on April 19, and the following day he made his initial appearance in Circuit Court on the felony charge. Judge Bruce Waters set Ortiz’s bail at $30,000 cash and appointed a public defender to represent him in the case.
On Wednesday, Ortiz waived his right to a preliminary hearing in Park County Circuit Court and the case was bound over to District Court, where he will enter a plea to the charge.
Ortiz is alleged to have gotten into a fight with a 19-year-old Powell man on the afternoon of Dec. 16. The two reportedly had previously argued over Ortiz dating the other man’s younger sister and happened to run into each other at Northwest Trading Post, police say.
As the two began to fight outside the shop, Ortiz pulled a knife and lunged at the other man, cutting his hand, the man and other witnesses told police.
Ortiz fled on foot. He later called police and told them he was hiding inside an empty trailer, but before he could be found, the call was disconnected.
The uncertainty of where Ortiz was — and specifically what home he may have been in as school was let out — led police to lock down most Powell schools.
The man reportedly stabbed was taken to Powell Valley Hospital and released later that day.
Ortiz’s then-18-year-old brother, Joshua Ortiz, served 13 days in jail, was fined and ordered to serve six months of unsupervised probation after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor count of being an accessory after the fact to a felony crime. As part of a plea agreement, a separate charge of interfering with police was dismissed at the Feb. 28 sentencing. Joshua Ortiz was present at the time of the stabbing and reportedly fled with his brother.
