Robert ‘Bob’ Leroy Barnes

(May 19, 2010)

Robert “Bob” Leroy Barnes, 84, died May 19, 2010, at the Powell Valley Care Center.

Bob was born in Powell on Feb. 26, 1926, to Roy “Rocky Mountain Cowboy” Barnes and Frances LaFollette Barnes.

When Bob was a toddler, the family lived on a farm just below Polecat Bench. Here he started his mechanical endeavors: his dad and granddad had set up the cultivator and left for a bit. On their return all the cultivator parts had been removed and neatly piled back up as they were before set-up.

Bob married Phyllis Patricia Singer on March 9, 1950.  During their early married life, they could be seen touring the roads and mountain trails on Bob's Harley.

Bob worked at various occupations during his life. He worked at his dad's Husky gas station, was a backhoe operator in Elk Basin, worked with the city engineering department, at MDU and as a carpenter. He was known as one of the best finish carpenters in the area at the time.

He enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing and was a member of the Big Horn Basin Boat Club. The family enjoyed weekends at Buffalo Bill Reservoir. He was also a member of the Powell Eagles Club.

He is survived by his sons Jack (Linda) of Powell and Dan (Rosemary) of Albany, Ore.;  grandchildren Christopher Barnes  and Amanda Barnes, both of Portland, Ore., Jackie Mosegard (Monty) of Powell, and Kristina Bunkers (Scott) of Three Forks, Mont.; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, May 22, at 10 a.m. at Thompson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. Memorials in Bob’s name may be sent to Powell Valley Hospice.
