John Joe Montez, 79, died April 19, 2010, after a short illness.

He was born Feb. 19, 1931, in Cedar Hills, Colo., the son of Jose and Marianna Montez.

John left home at an early age to work in the coal mines and oil fields of Wyoming, Montana, Utah, California and Saudi Arabia. He served with the U.S. Army, 1950-56, and was a veteran of the Korean War.

He married Helen Hull in 1965 in Worland.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, making wind chimes, woodworking, carving and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of 44 years; two daughters Karen Gregerson (Gary) of Reno, Nev., and Barbara Robinson of Casper; a son, Michael Christiansen (fiancé Candy Shanks) of Powell; six grandchildren, Terry Richard, Kim Richard, Chris Richard, Brad Christiansen (Bel), Krista Foster (Jeremy) and Breann Christiansen; five great-grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and one brother, Lawrence Montez (Irma) of Pueblo, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Clara Bowman; and six brothers:  Julius, Gilbert, Manuel (Peita), Nash, Dimas and Mike.

A color guard service, with Billy Greaham officiating, will be Friday, April 23 at 2 p.m. at Crown Hill Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Powell American Legion.

Haskell Funeral Home in Lovell is in charge of arrangments.
