Homes aglow with Christmas decorations have captured the attention of passersby. Some of those homes also caught the eye of the city’s judging committee, which recognized various residences and businesses in the annual City of Powell Christmas Decorating Contest.
The 2010 winners for best-decorated residential displays are:
• First place: Kim and Jocelyn Frame, 1202 Amy Lane
• Second place: Merlin and Dorothy Olson, 928 Sylvan Court
• Third place: Syd and Kim Thompson, 275 Stockade Court
Honorable mention: Don and Judy Hillman, 910 East Monroe; Curt and Valorie Perl, 882 Davis Road and William and Diane Palin, 1159 Road 8.
For best-decorated business display, the winners are:
• First place: Gift Emporium, 115 North Bent St.
• Honorable mention: Powell Office Supply, 265 North Bent St. and Four Seasons Floral, 102 North Bent St.
The mayor’s choice award went to Olson Fencing, 176 North Day St..
All city residences with outdoor Christmas displays were included in the judging, which took place Dec. 13-17.
First-place residential display winners Kim and Jocelyn Frame adorned their home with red and white twinkling Christmas lights.
“It’s nice and neat,” Jocelyn said of the display. “We outlined (the house) like a gingerbread house.”
Decorating the home is an annual holiday tradition for the Frame family.
“I just really like decorating,” Jocelyn said.
This year, the couple’s three adult children and six grandchildren will be home for Christmas.
The Frames plan to keep their Christmas lights up through New Years, she said.
Jocelyn said the family enjoys seeing lighted homes around Powell.
“We enjoy them, so then that’s something we can contribute to the community by decorating our home,” she said.
Jocelyn said the inspiration for the red-and-white Christmas display came from seeing another Powell home decorated in the colors.
She said it’s likely the family will admire other residential decorations this weekend, just like in years past.
“It’s a Christmas Eve tradition,” she said. “We usually try to go to the different sections of town.”
Jocelyn added she’s thankful for all the Powell residents who decorate their homes.
“It’s fun to be a part of a community that likes to do this,” she said.
