Tribune photo by Greg Wise Final-inning homer foils All-Star hopes Victory eluded the Powell Babe Ruth All-Stars by the slimmest of margins on Tuesday as the team opened play at the Pacific Northwest regional tournament in Klamath Falls, Ore. After leading for much of the contest, Powell was tagged late for a two-run homer, falling 7-6 to northern Oregon representative Hermiston.

Unlike a year ago, when Powell suffered a string of four regional tournament defeats, all via the 10-run rule, the 2010 edition of the All-Stars demonstrated on day one that they very much belong at regional competition. In doing so, they found themselves in the most exciting of the tournament's four opening-round games.

Powell surrendered an unearned run in the first inning, but quickly recovered to plate three runs and grab the lead.

Powell pushed its scoreboard advantage to 5-2 and held that margin through the middle innings.

Hermiston rallied late, tying the score at 5-5. In the top of the seventh inning, the north Oregon squad connected for a two-run home run off closing pitcher Justin Lynn. Powell rallied for one run in the bottom half of the seventh, but wasn't able to plate a second to force extra innings.

Cooper Wise, playing in his second regional tournament as a member of the All-Stars, drove in three runs. Lynn, Brendan Phister and Cory Heny, like Wise, all finished with two hits each for Powell.

The six runs plated by the All-Stars in the contest surpassed the team's highest run count at the 2009 regional tournament. Powell was scheduled to face the Klamath Falls Americans on Wednesday. That contest had not ended when today's sports section went to press.

The Americans fell 26-5 to Kelso, Wash., on the opening day of the tournament. Powell will play Kelso and the Klamath Falls Nationals in pool play games later this week. The top two teams from Powell's pool will advance to cross-bracket semifinal play on Sunday.
