The Broncs tallied the only goal in extra time to score a 3-2 overtime win in 3A West conference play. The decision came less than 24 hours after the Panthers pummelled Pinedale by a 7-1 final count, earning the team a split of weekend games.

“Saturday was a really close, really well-played game,” said Powell head coach Pat D'Alessandro. “The first half was just back and forth, then the second half was more about defense, and then the overtime. It was a good game, and one we really felt like we should have won if we do a few things better.”

Drayson Bratt opened the scoring in the contest, bending a ball from 20 yards out into the left corner of the goal for the Panthers. Jackson answered minutes later off a penalty kick goal, but Powell immediately reclaimed its lead as Reed Hackworth converted a Panther corner kick.

Jackson tied the game at halftime with a late first-period goal.

Neither team was able to score in the second half. The Panthers attempted some lineup adjustments to better take advantage of what the coaching staff felt was superior team speed, but were unable to parlay the edge into goals.

“We had open opportunities, but we didn't finish well in the second half,” said D'Alessandro. “Then in overtime, we relaxed for a moment and the ball takes a high hop off the turf, over our guy and gives their forward a clear path to the goal.”

The Panthers were also hampered in extra time by having to play without the services of Greg Randolph, who suffered a concussion late in the second half.

“Overall, I thought our defense played really well,” said D'Alessandro. “Jackson's strength is really up front and playing through balls for their forwards, and we did a very good job of preventing that and guarding against it.”

The Panthers did a nice job defensively on Friday as well, holding Pinedale off the board until late in the second half.

Christian Frederiksen and Jason Rand each put a pair of goals on the board for Powell. Randolph, Hackworth and Levi Anderson rounded out the scoring in Powell's 7-1 win.

“We got out to a 4-0 lead at halftime and were able to play the JV guys for 20-25 minutes in the second half,” said D'Alessandro. “Pinedale is a very young team.”

More than the margin of victory, the Panthers' head coach noted he was most pleased by the team's execution of its game plan against Pinedale.

“After the Cody loss, we set out a strategy to use the width of the field better, and we did it really well in this game,” said D'Alessandro. “Our outside players had a really good game, moving passes around, and it made the game seem really simple.”

The Panthers played both games without a pair of starters who were taking part in a band trip for Powell High School instead. Bratt had to sit out Friday's game, the result of a red card received in the Panthers' previous contest.
