Only Sheridan finishes ahead of Powell girls, boysThe Powell High School track teams scored runner-up finishes at the 12-school Worland Invitational on Friday. The Panthers placed second to Sheridan in both the boys' and the girls' final standings. Desiree Murray led a 1-2-3 parade across the 800-meter finish line for the Panthers, winning the event in a time of 2:34.17. Teammates Kassey MacDonald (2:40.04) and Brooke Nisley (2:42.85) followed. Tess Mitchell placed sixth after running to a time of 2:50.45, helping the Panthers claim still more points in the event.

MacDonald added a second-place finish in the long jump for Powell with a distance of 15'1”. Mitchell was fifth in the 400 with a time of 1:10.14.

Other Panthers notching strong days included Kendra Ostrom with a second-place finish in the high jump (4'9”) and third-place in the triple jump (32') and Alyssa Rodriguez with a third-place finish in the 400 (1:07.17) and fourth-place in the 200 (29.11). Stephanie Paul finished right behind Rodriguez in both races with times of 1:08.1 in the 400 and 29.13 in the 200.

Emily Kath picked up a pair of eighth-place finishes in the shot put (29') and discus (86'7”) for Powell. Marquette McArthur was third in the discus with a toss of 100'8”. Kami Cooley rounded out the individual results for Powell by placing as part of a four-way tie for fourth place in the high jump, clearing 4'5”.

In the relay portion of the competition, the Panthers' 4x400 relay squad of Paul, MacDonald, Rodriguez and Murray narrowly missed earning automatic qualifier status for state with a time of 4:25.65). The 4x100 team (Kadi Cooley, Kami Cooley, Paul and Ostrom) placed third in a time of 55.58.

“I was very pleased with the ladies' performances,” said Powell coach Scott Smith. “Cody wasn't at full strength for this meet, but everyone else was. They are really starting to show the improvement we had hoped for, which is something I can say for many of our young kids, both girls and boys. This is the type of improvement we need in order to end the season being very competitive at regional and state competition.”

On the boys' side of the competition, Andrew Young led a 1-3-4-8 finish in the discus for Powell.

Young's winning toss of 140'2” was one of nine Powell marks to surpass the state's qualifying standards on Friday.

Jacob Beuster (third, 129'), Vince Sleep (fourth, 118'5”) and Regan Soloai (eighth, 110'6”) rounded out Powell's discus dominance. Young and Beuster also returned to the top eight in the shot put as Young placed second with a throw of 45'9” and Beuster was fifth with a distance of 42'8.75”.

Young was one of two first-place finishers for the Panthers on Friday. Teammate Kyle Sullivan topped the charts in both the high jump (6') and the 110-meter hurdles (14.9). Both performances surpassed the state's qualifying standards.

Sullivan also earned automatic-qualifier status in the 300-meter hurdles, placing second with a time of 39.65 seconds.

Also earning automatic qualifier status in a trio of events for Powell on Friday was Drew Magill. Magill placed third in both the 100 (11.25) and the 200 (23.25), while finishing second in the triple jump (42'). The top three finishers in the 100 meters placed within one-hundredth of a second of each other.

Josh Cragoe placed third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.24 seconds to surpass the qualifying standard in that event by more than one second.

Also netting points for Powell on the day were Colby Gilmore (sixth in the 200, second in the 400), Danny McKearney (sixth in the 1600 and 3200), Dylan Ulmer (seventh in the 400), Zach Thiel (seventh in the 800), Cody Fagley (fifth in the 1600), Bodie Friday (eighth in the 1600), Matt Condie (seventh in the pole vault), Kyle Woodward (seventh in the triple jump) and Cale Anderson (eighth in the triple jump).

In relay competition, the Panthers' 4x400 relay team of Sullivan, Thiel, Cragoe and Gilmore turned in a strong early-season time to place second in a time of 3:36.06, surpassing the state qualifying standard in the process.

Powell's 4x800 relay consisting of Patrick Voss, Justin Lynn, Tyler McCauley and Thiel, also placed second, missing automatic qualifier status by eight-hundredths of a second when the final clock showed a time of 8:56.24.

Powell's 4x100 team (Cameron Bennett, Woodward, Sleep and Cragoe) rounded out the competition with a fourth-place finish. The foursome turned in a time of 47.25 seconds.

Powell returns to action on Saturday when the Panthers host their annual home track meet. Action starts at 10 a.m.

The Panthers also announced a change to the spring track schedule. The team will be going to Lovell on April 24 rather than to Sheridan.

Combined standings: Sheridan 291.5, Powell 240.5, Cody 178, Riverton 113, Worland 108.5, Thermopolis 81, Buffalo 72, Burlington 44, Tongue River 39.5, Burlington 38.5, Ten Sleep 24, Big Horn 22.5, Meeteetse 10.
