The Panther teams were in Cody to open the season. “It was a great kickoff to the season,” said Powell High School track coach Scott Smith. “The weather held out pretty well and the kids competed very well.”

Junior Kyle Sullivan captured the championship in the boys' 110-meter hurdles, running an electronically timed 15.6 seconds. Sullivan also punched his ticket to state in the 300-meter hurdles and the high jump, where he is the defending 3A champion. Sullivan was second in the high jump, clearing the bar at six feet, and placed third in the 300-meter hurdles.

“While a couple of competitors were laying on the ground after the 300 hurdles, Kyle walked over to the high jump and made 5'10” and 6'. That is really tough to do that soon after the 300 hurdles,” Smith said. “Of course, Kyle wasn't happy with himself because he is a competitor, but it was still amazing.”

Sullivan also teamed up with Zach Thiel, Josh Cragoe and Colby Gilmore to qualify the Panthers' 4x400 relay squad for the state meet. The foursome clocked a time of 3:36.93 to comfortably win the final race of the day.

Cragoe also joined Sullivan in qualifying in the 110-meter hurdles, placing third in a time of 15.79 seconds.

Drew MaGill earned the other state championship qualification for the Panther boys. MaGill placed second in the long jump with a leap of 20'11-3/4”. It was one of four top-six finishes for MaGill on the day. MaGill also placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 40'7-1/4”, third in the 200 meters with a time of 23.77 seconds and sixth in the 100 with a time of 11.89 seconds. The field in the 100 meters was so tightly bunched that MaGill was just 0.03 seconds out of a fourth place finish.

Others finishing in the top eight for the Panther boys included Gilmore in the 200 (fourth, 23.83), Thiel in the 400 (eighth, 56.87), Patrick Voss in the 800 (sixth, 2:19.35), Danny McKearney (fifth, 11:31.06) and Bodie Friday (sixth, 11:32.09) in the 3200, Matthew Condie in the pole vault (fifth, 11'6”), Cale Anderson in the triple jump (eighth, 33'6”) and Jacob Beuster in the shot put (third, 43'9.5”) and discus (sixth, 118'4”).

The Panthers' 4x800 relay team of Friday, McKearney, Thiel and Cody Fagley placed second in a time of 9:05.25.

On the girls' side of the equation, Desiree Murray had the day's only state qualifying time after placing second in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 48.88 seconds.

Murray also contributed to the lone first-place event finish by the Panther girls. Murray combined forces with teammates Kassey MacDonald, Claire Wetzel and Tess Mitchell to motor to the front of the pack in the 4x800 relay, winning with a time of 11:04.66.

Wetzel was the only other Lady Panther team member to place in the top three of an event. The returning state qualifier placed third in the 3200 meters with a time of 15:06.88.

Other top-eight performances were turned in by Kendra Ostrum in the 100 (sixth, 14.65) and high jump (sixth, 4'8”), Stephanie Paul in the 200 (fourth, 29.92), Hannah Pollart in the high jump (fifth, 4'8”), Tess Mitchell (fifth, 5'6”) and Kadi Cooley (sixth, 5') in the pole vault, MacDonald in the long jump (eighth, 14'4-1/4”) and Hannah Groves in the shot put (fifth, 31'5”).

The 4x400 girls' relay team of Murray, MacDonald, Mitchell and Paul placed fourth in a time of 4:37.77. The 4x100 foursome of Cooley, Pollart, Paul and Ostrom crossed in sixth place, carrying the baton to a 57.1-second time.

As a team, the Powell boys were second behind Sheridan, trailing by 30 in the final team standings, 133-103. Cody was third with a team score of 88 points.

Powell's girls placed fifth from among a field of 13 schools, scoring 59 points as a team. Cody edged Lovell 107-100 for the team title. Thermopolis was third with 84 points.

“Sheridan is the favorite to win 4A boys and Wind River is the favorite in 2A boys,” said Smith. “Cody is the favorite to repeat in 3A girls and Lovell has one of the top 2A girls' teams, so the level of competition was very high for an early season invitational. It was good to see that our conditioning is a bit ahead of last year at this point.”

The Panthers hope to host a field and relay rendezvous meet on Thursday, starting at 4 p.m.

Girls' team scores: Cody 107, Lovell 100, Thermopolis 84, Sheridan 66, Powell 59, Tongue River 57, Riverton 46, Wind River 45, Burlington 32, Meeteetse 21, Greybull 13, Riverside 12, Rocky Mountain 5.
