Tribune photo by Don AmendThe Powell Lady Panthers celebrated senior night at the PHS pool Tuesday by taking a big win over Cody.Powell swimmers won all but one event as they sailed to a 133-52 team win over the Fillies in their last home meet of the season. The meet marked the last home appearance for seniors Samantha Baker, Jessica Curtis, Jenna Hotovec, Kourtnie Rodgers and Stepfanie Thompson, and Baker Hotovec. Rodgers and Curtis set the tone for the meet by winning the first event, the medley relay.

Curtis finished with two individual wins, the individual medley and the 100-meter freestyle, while Baker won the 50-meter freestyle and finished second to Curtis in the 100. Rodgers won the breaststroke and senior diver Stepfanie Thompson was the top diver.

Curtis and Baker also accounted for another first, joining Alice Pinter and Maddy Jones to win the 200-meter freestyle relay.

Other first-place winners were Jones in 200-meter, Pinter in the butterfly and backstroke, and the 400-meter relay team of Pinter, Jones, Anya Tracy and Jessica Wurzel.

Curtis' win in the individual medley led a Lady Panther sweep of the event, as Tracy, Brittany Christensen, Jessica Wurzel and Sierra Baker took the next four places for Powell's most dominent performance in the meet.

Lady Panthers took four of the top five places in two other events. In the 100, Belen Quillen and Tracy took fourth and fifth behind Curtis and Samantha Baker's one-two finish. In the breaststoke, Rodgers was followed by Jones and Hotovec in second and third while Lori Hetzel finished fifth.

Sierra Baker and Wurzel finished second and third behind Pinter in the backstroke. Alyssa Smith finished second to Jones in the 200 while Hotovec finished fourth. Quillen and Claire Wetzel finished fourth and fifth in the 50 behind winner Samantha Baker. Christensen was third in the butterfly followed by Smith in fourth place. In diving, Emily Newlin finished second to Thompson and Molly McCray finished fourth.

Wetzel was the lone Powell placer with a second in the 400 meters, the only event not won by Powell.

While there were no new state qualifiers in the meet, Coach Luke Robertson was happy with the girls' performance, and said the team was still on track to be prepared for state competition.

In a special feature of the meet, Robertson and assistant coach Tanya Fawcett-Kay joined a pair of Cody coaches in the medley relay to start the meet. Although the coaches didn't finish last, thanks to fast laps by the Powell coaches, they were well behind the Powell and Cody A teams, and they were much more tired afterward.

In addition, diving Coach Stephanie Warren entered her event and earned a score which would not have beaten Thompson, but that would have qualified her for state.

The Lady Panthers have this weekend off, and will travel to Worland Tuesday, Oct. 6, for a return dual with the Lady Warriors, beginning at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 10, they will compete in the Lander Invitational to close their regular season, and then compete in the conference meet in Lyman Oct. 16 and 17.
