Park County's primary election results are in

Posted

Park County voters have cast their ballots in the primary election and the votes have been (unofficially) counted.

Here's a brief recap of what happened:

* Republican voters across the county have picked incumbent Lee Livingston of Wapiti and newcomer Jake Fulkerson of Cody to advance to November's general election. Richard George of rural Cody finished a fairly close third, while further back were South Fork resident Boone Tidwell and Willwood resident Bob Ruckman. It's not clear whether a Democrat will oppose the GOP nominees.

* Rep. Dan Laursen, R-Powell, handily defeated Republican challenger Dave Blevins in House District 25; it was a rematch of the 2014 Republican primary election.

* The re-election bid of embattled state Rep. Sam Krone, R-Cody, has been rejected in House District 24. Voters favored his challenger — Republican Scott Court of Cody — by a margin of more than two to one.

* Powell Mayor Don Hillman crushed his two challengers, James Andrews and Dawson Wolff, but he'll have a rematch with Andrews in November's general election. Wolff was eliminated by finishing in third place. In the race to represent Ward 3 on the Powell City Council, incumbent Lesli Spencer edged Doug Kirkham. However, the two will face each other again in November. Over in Cody's mayoral race, Charles Cloud edged Matt Hall by four votes — a fraction of a percent. They'll both advance to November's ballot, while fellow contender Tim Lamb was eliminated with a third-place showing.

* Like other voters around the state, Park County residents heavily favored Republican Liz Cheney (over seven other contenders) and Democrat Ryan Greene (over Charlie Hardy) in the race for the U.S. House.

Voter turnout was not very good, dropping a bit from 2012, the last presidential election year.

We'll have a whole lot more coverage and analysis in Thursday's edition of the Powell Tribune. Full unofficial results can be found on Park County's elections site.

Our earlier updates can be found in the box below. Scroll down further for a little more information about the races we were tracking.

We focused on these races during tonight's coverage:

* Park County Commission: Five Republicans — Jake Fulkerson, Richard George, incumbent Lee Livingston, Bob Ruckman and Boone Tidwell — are running for two seats. The top two vote-getters will advance to the general election and, unless an independent or Democratic challenger emerges, be unopposed.

* House District 25: Republican state Rep. Dan Laursen is being challenged by fellow Republican Dave Blevins in a rematch of the 2014 primary. The winner will face Democrat Shane Tillotson in November for the Powell area seat.

* House District 24: Republican state Rep. Sam Krone faces challenger Scott Court. The winner will likely face Democrat Paul Fees and independent candidate Sandy Newsome in November for the Cody area seat.

* Powell and Cody Mayor: In Powell, current Mayor Don Hillman faces challenges from James Andrews and Dawson Wolff; in Cody, Charles Cloud, Matt Hall and Tim Lamb compete to replace Mayor Nancy Tia Brown, who isn't seeking re-election. Only the top two vote-getters in the mayoral races will advance to November's general election. Doug Kirkham and incumbent Lesli Spencer are competing to represent Powell's Ward 3 on the city council, but the primary will serve as little more than a poll: both candidates will advance to the general election for a rematch.

* U.S. House of Representatives: Republican voters in Park County and across the state are choosing between eight candidates (Liz Cheney, Tim Stubson, Leland Christensen, Darin Smith, Mike Konsmo, Paul Paad, Jason Senteney and Heath Beaudry) and Democrats between two (Ryan Greene and Charlie Hardy). The major parties' winners will face Constitution Party candidate Daniel Cummings and Libertarian Lawrence Struempf in November.
