Boys and Girls Club burglarized

Posted

Sometime between Friday evening and Monday morning, a thief or thieves appear to have stolen a few hundred dollars worth of items from the Boys and Girls Club in Powell.

Powell Police Chief Roy Eckerdt said it appeared the burglar(s) most likely got into the East Fifth Street building through an unlocked window.

“It’s obviously still under investigation,” Eckerdt said.

The stolen items — around $160 in cash and an Xbox video game console — had a combined value of $366, he said.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Park County Chief Professional Officer Tina Bernard said that, given a footprint at the scene and other indications, the theft appeared to have been the work of children who knew the building’s layout. Bernard said the club was “so sad” about the break-in.

“We struggle just to keep our doors open to all the wonderful youth in the community so this further compounds our financial problems,” she wrote in a Facebook post.

While $160 might not sound like a lot of money to some people, “to us it was like a million (dollars),” Bernard said in an interview. She said the stolen cash was money that club members’ parents had paid for upcoming field trips and treats — including a weekend visit to a Billings water park. That’s money the Boys and Girls Club will now need to come up with given that, “obviously it’s not the parents’ fault or the kids’ fault,” Bernard said.

The crime apparently occurred sometime between 5:30 p.m. Friday  and 7:45 a.m. Monday.

“If anybody saw something that made them go, ‘hmm, that’s odd,’ give us a call,” Eckerdt asked.

Bernard asked parents to be on the lookout for children who inexplicably have extra spending money or a Xbox show up. She also said it appears that whoever broke into the Powell club’s cashbox cut themselves.

The non-profit Boys and Girls Clubs of Park County welcomes donations, which can be deposited at First Bank of Wyoming or sent or delivered to 815 E. 5th Street in Powell or to 308 16th Street in Cody.
