Northwest College retirements announced

Sixteen people have submitted their paperwork for a special early retirement offer at Northwest College.

NWC President Stefani Hicswa said all of the deadlines for early retirement contracts were fulfilled by Friday.

The early retirement offer was extended in April as part of the college’s cost-cutting efforts. Northwest faces a revenue cut of more than $2.3 million, and Hicswa has said it could be as high as $3.9 million.

Last year’s budget for NWC was $22.3 million.

The NWC Board of Trustees reviewed a preliminary budget for the college at its meeting on Monday, but final revenue figures won’t be available until later this month, according to NWC Vice President Lisa Watson.

Combined, the retiring employees have a total of nearly 314 years of experience at NWC.

Hicswa provided a list of the retiring employees and their lengths of employment on Monday. They are:

• Gary Anderson, facilities technician — 16 years

• Gary Bakken, assistant professor of photography — 24.75 years

• Burt Bradley, associate professor of English — 30.25 years

• Roger Brazelton, facilities assistant — 14.5 years

• Dennis Brophy, professor of psychology — 24.75 years

• John Campbell, professor of biological sciences — 31.25 years

• Val Hieb, administrative secretary for administrative services — 31.33 years

• Mary Ellen Ibarra-Robinson, associate professor of Spanish — 33.25 years

• Jan Kraft, associate professor of accounting/business administration — 17.75 years

• Ronda Peer, dean of extended campus and workforce — 23.92 years

• Nickie Proffitt, writer and web content analyst — 28.33 years

• Lisa Satterlee, assistant professor of business office technology — 33 years

• Rob Schuller, printing services manager — 31 years

• Renee Tafoya, associate professor of art and graphic design — 17.25 years

• Nancy Walker, assistant professor of mathematics — 31.83 years

• Joyce Woodward, facilities assistant — 10.25 years

Bakken, Brophy, Kraft and Walker will retire on June 30. Anderson, Bradley, Brazelton, Campbell, Hieb, Ibarra-Robinson, Peer, Proffitt, Satterlee, Tafoya and Woodward will leave on Dec. 31. Schuller will retire on Jan. 31.

In her last report, Hicswa said college leaders still were determining which positions would be filled and which would not be staffed.

In a campus-wide email Friday, Hicswa said the position for vice president for student services has been posted. The position has been vacant for about a year, since Sean Fox accepted employment at another institution.

During that vacancy, Gerald Giraud, vice president for administrative services, and Hicswa have shared duties normally covered by that position.

“The funding for this position was never removed from the budget, as I had not made a decision on the permanent staffing pattern until a few weeks ago,” Hicswa said in the email.

Arrangements are underway for teaching out three discontinued programs at Northwest College.

NWC President Stefani Hicswa said 13 students are enrolled in the three ending programs — six in journalism, six in film/radio/TV and one in farrier business management.

No other programs are being considered for termination, Hicswa said.

“We will develop a plan for current students to be able to complete their degrees,” Hicswa said. “We are analyzing student transcripts to determine what we need to offer next year.”

No new students will be accepted into the three programs.

Hicswa announced the program closures in May as part of the college’s cost-cutting efforts to deal with a large reduction in revenue for the coming year.
