PHS wins 3A championship at State Drama Competition

Powell High School theatre students finished their weekend with a dramatic win, bringing home the 3A championship from the State Drama Competition in Laramie.

“I am very proud of how hard the students worked,” said Robert Hunt, PHS theatre director. “State Drama provides a great way for students to gain a wide variety of experience in theatre.”

He said on one end of the spectrum, students analyze literature so they can make performance choices in one-act plays, monologues and scenes.

“On the other end of the spectrum, students are doing the same sort of deep analysis to make design choices and incorporate technology,” Hunt said.

That includes using 3-D printer technology to make models and create augmented reality designs — a sort of 3-dimensional virtual model, he said.

“We are very lucky to have such dedicated students,” Hunt said. “I hope that we will be able to add more opportunities since the students obviously have the interest and passion for the activity.”

This is the sixth state drama championship for Powell High School in eight years, Hunt said.

In addition to their overall victory as a 3A team over the weekend, PHS theatre students also earned sixth place with their one-act arena play.

Following their weekend win, theatre students wasted no time in preparing for their next challenge: auditions for the musical “Back to the ’80s the Totally Awesome Musical” that they will perform in February.

“On the bus ride home, students immediately distributed scripts, and read out loud from the musical ... while listening to the music for the show,” Hunt said. “It’s nice to see that kind of passion for the activity.”
