Three North Fork campgrounds move to hard-sided only

Posted

Three North Fork campgrounds are restricted to hard-sided camping until further notice, the Wapiti Ranger District of the Shoshone National Forest announced on Friday.

Due to unusually high bear activity in the corridor along the North Fork of the Shoshone River, no tents or pop-up campers are allowed in the Big Game Campground, Elk Fork Campground and Wapiti Campground.

“We have decided to place a hard-sided camping restriction in these three campgrounds for public safety reasons,” said Wapiti District Ranger Sue Stresser. “As a reminder to the public, hard-sided camping means that no tents or pop-up campers are allowed in Elk Fork, Big Game, or Wapiti campgrounds until further notice. Please check the Shoshone National Forest website for updates on these campgrounds.”

Tent camping still is allowed in two campgrounds in the corridor along the North Fork of the Shoshone River: Rex Hale and Clearwater campgrounds still allow tents and pop-up campers as well as hard-sided options. The Shoshone National Forest has decided to extend the open period of these two campgrounds an extra week. Rex Hale Campground and Clearwater Campground will now remain open until Sept. 15.

Information and updates are available at www.fs.usda.gov/shoshone, on Twitter (@ShoshoneNF), or on Facebook (US Forest Service – Shoshone National Forest).
