The Park County Sheriff’s Office and the Cody Police Department helped track down a runaway Riverton teen on Tuesday.
Park County law enforcement had been asked to be on the lookout for 13-year-old girl around 10 a.m. Tuesday, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. Although too young to legally drive, the girl had taken her sister’s red 2002 Pontiac and driven to Cody from Riverton, said sheriff’s spokesman Lance Mathess.
The teenager’s sister called Park County dispatchers shortly before noon to report she’d just received word that the girl was at the Cody McDonald’s. Dispatchers immediately relayed the information to the officers on patrol.
Minutes later, the Cody Police Department’s code enforcement officer spotted the girl’s Pontiac heading east on the the Greybull Highway (U.S. Highway 14-16-20), past Choice Aviation. The code enforcement officer began following the vehicle while a sheriff’s deputy responded.
The teen eventually turned south on Wyo. Highway 120, heading toward Meeteetse. A deputy arrived at 12:12 p.m., pulled the teen over at milepost 70 and took her into custody.
The girl was eventually released to her mother, the sheriff’s office said.
