A motorcyclist died in a crash on the Beartooth Highway on Monday afternoon.
Matthew S. Wickel, 50, of Thayne, sustained fatal injuries at the scene of the crash, which occurred at 2:50 p.m. on U.S. Highway 212 at mile post 30, approximately 5 miles south of the Montana border, according to a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
Wickel was operating a 2002 Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound on U.S. 212, with rain and snowfall occurring. Wickel lost control of the motorcycle, crossed the centerline and left the highway to the south, down a small hill, according to Highway Patrol.
Wickel and his passenger, 58-year-old Dawn Patterson of Grand Blanc, Michigan, both were thrown from the motorcycle during the crash. Patterson was transported by helicopter ambulance to Billings and has been hospitalized. Neither Wickel or Patterson was wearing a helmet.
Speed and weather conditions are being investigated as contributing factors in the crash, according to the Highway Patrol.
The crash marked the 92nd highway fatality in Wyoming for 2015. There were 97 highway fatalities as of this date last year
