BILLINGS (AP) — A couple and their daughter were gunned down when they stopped to help a man whose vehicle had run out of gas on the Crow Indian Reservation, a relative said.

FBI spokesman Todd Palmer confirms that two people were killed and a third wounded Wednesday morning in Pryor. He said a suspect was later arrested near Meeteetse.

Palmer could not say what led to the shooting and did not release the victims’ names.

Bryce Hugs of Pryor told the Billings Gazette that his aunt, Tana Shane, drove by the stranded man just south of Pryor and returned with her husband and daughter to offer help.

Hugs said the man opened fire, killing Tana and Jason Shane and wounded their daughter, Jora Shane.

The shooting happened Wednesday morning on a street in Pryor, a town of just over 600 people about 35 miles south of Billings, Big Horn County (Montana) Undersheriff Bart Elliott said.

Authorities were searching for a fifth person who was a witness, he said.

A report from the Park County (Wyoming) Sheriff’s Office said the Park County Communications Center received a report at 10:30 a.m. about the shooting and asking law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for a 2006 silver/gray Pontiac G6 with Montana registration wanted in connection with the double homicide.

A Park County sheriff’s deputy spotted the vehicle southbound on Highway 120 at milepost 68, just north of the Stage Stop at 11:49 a.m., the release said.

“The deputy immediately turned and began following the suspect vehicle,” the report stated. “The initial reports were that this homicide suspect was armed and to be considered dangerous, therefore the deputy made the decision not to attempt apprehension until he had backup officers available. A trooper from the Wyoming Highway Patrol was nearest to the location and was immediately dispatched to assist.”

The suspect vehicle turned northeast on County Road 3LE, commonly referred to as the Burlington cut across, with the deputy following for approximately 12 miles. The trooper arrived at 12:30 p.m. and the suspect was stopped and taken into custody without incident, the Park County Sheriff’s report stated.

The report said the suspect’s identity was witheld at the request of the lead investigation agency.
