Trailer crushes truck at landfill

Posted

A tractor-trailer tipped over and crushed a man’s pickup at the Powell landfill, but no one was injured in the Saturday afternoon accident.

According to the Park County Sheriff’s Office, Craig Coen, 52, of Powell, pulled his 1998 Dodge pickup alongside the semi-truck and was preparing to dump some trash into the landfill’s construction and demolition area. Coen was at the tailgate of his truck when he saw a shadow approaching and realized the dump trailer on the neighboring semi-truck was tipping over, said sheriff’s spokesman Lance Mathess. Coen got out of the way before the trailer came crashing down on his Dodge.

James Haworth, 66, also of Powell, had been attempting to dump a load of dirt, gravel and trash from the trailer, Mathess said. However, when the dump trailer reached its peak tipping height, Haworth realized its tailgate hadn’t opened and the trash was not coming out. He began lowering the trailer to check on the tailgate, but at that point it was too late: the trailer had already begun tipping over, Mathess said.

The trailer hit Coen’s pickup and also flipped Haworth’s tractor on its side.

Members of the Powell Volunteer Fire Department and Park County Landfill staff helped sort out the vehicles after the mishap.

The sheriff’s office was still investigating the incident as of Monday, Mathess said.
