Trailer parking problems; Council to draft ordinance

Posted

The problem of trailer parking obscuring traffic in Powell will be addressed by the city.

The Powell City Council will draft an ordinance on trailer parking, it decided during its meeting Monday night.

The council looked at ordinances now in place in Casper, Jackson and other cities. Mayor Don Hillman appointed a committee of Councilmen Jim Hillberry, John Wetzel and Tim Sapp as well as Public Works Director Gary Butts to draft a trailer parking ordinance for the city. The council then endorsed the committee.

A recent Powell Tribune story helped engender public discussion on the issue, the elected officials said.

“I think people really want something done about this,” Councilman Josh Shorb said.

Hillman and other councilmen said they have also heard considerable comment as well.

“I’ve had a ton of calls,” the mayor said, noting it will be impossible to please everyone, but he hopes a solution can be reached that will be acceptable to all.

The current city ordinance is to park at least 40 feet from intersecting streets to keep sight distances open, according to Butts.

“If needed at certain intersections, the streets department is prepared to place markers to help locate the 40 feet,” Butts said in February.

The council looked at the issue in 2013 and asked the Powell Police Department and streets Department to examine the current law. Police Chief Roy Eckerdt said enforcement was on a complaint-only basis, and no citations have been issued in recent years.

Councilmen said the problem was a growing concern among the public, and that has spurred them into action.
