A severed fiber optic cable was to blame for the loss of CenturyLink phone and Internet service and AT&T cellular service in Powell and Cody on Thursday afternoon.
The outage lasted more than five and a half hours.
It began around 2 p.m. when "a third party cut our fiber, which affected CenturyLink customers in both Cody and Powell," said Michelle Jackson, a spokeswoman for the communications company. "At CenturyLink we place a priority on customer service and because of this, we had our technicians on-site immediately to repair the cut fiber."
Jackson said Thursday night that CenturyLink expected service to be restored by 8:30 p.m. For at least some AT&T customers, service was restored beginning around 7:30 p.m.
Monte McClain, the communications supervisor for the Park County Sheriff's Office, said the outage took down just one of the agency's multiple 911 lines. He said that's why 911 lines are routed through multiple circuits.
