Cody man, 25, dies in one-car rollover Sunday

A Cody man was killed and three passengers injured Sunday in a single-vehicle rollover crash west of Powell.

Matthew Joseph McNamara, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2179 Lane 13 1/2 by emergency responders from Powell Valley Healthcare shortly after 4 p.m. McNamara’s three passengers, Sean Michael Roberts, 23, Elizabeth Magdalena Gurrola, 21, and Joe Fred Walker, 24, all from Powell, were transported to Powell Valley Hospital with multiple injuries.

Roberts and Gurrola were then flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Billings for further treatment. Both were listed in stable condition Monday afternoon. Walker was treated at Powell Valley Hospital and released.

The investigation revealed that McNamara was operating a 2002 Mercury sedan eastbound in the 2100 block of Lane 13 1/2 at a speed too fast for conditions, according to a release from the Park County Sheriff’s Office.

Roberts estimated their speed to be 55 miles per hour at the time of the crash. McNamara lost control on a curve, swerved into the oncoming lane, over-corrected, slid sideways and rolled off the south side of the roadway.

The vehicle rolled once and landed upright. McNamara was partially ejected from the vehicle.

Roberts was seated in the front passenger seat and Gurrola directly behind him. Walker was seated behind McNamara. Seat belt usage is unknown, but alcohol is believed to have been a factor. Toxicology tests will be performed on McNamara by County Coroner Tim Power.
