Meeteetse Ice Fishing Derby scheduled for Feb. 15-16
Ready to chill out and find frozen February fun?
Six years ago the Meeteetse Visitors Center needed a winter event to bring folks to their town and the annual Meeteetse Ice Fishing Derby was created, according to Tess Fremlin, the MVC events coordinator.
There is a limit of 100 three-person teams who can place first through fifth in the winning slots, Fremlin said. Kids are not only welcome but they can enter for free. The Small Fry Division is free to enter and prizes will be given out for first through fifth place.
After the first day of fishing, and maybe a nap in one of the fine motels in Meeteetse, you can slide on over to the NRA Wall of Guns raffle and dinner at the Elkhorn Bar & Grill beginning at 6 p.m., she said.
For every 100 raffle tickets that are sold, a ticket will be drawn from those 100, and that winner will have their choice of a gun, Fremlin said.
Then 100 more tickets will be sold, with one ticket drawn from those 100, and so on and so forth, she said. Each bundle of 100 tickets will be tossed after a winner is drawn, then they will go on to the next batch.
“We are pre-selling tickets right now and I believe that the first 100 have already sold,” Fremlin said. “So there will be a winner.”
A free meal will be given with each ticket purchase. Pre-event tickets are being sold and tickets can be purchased at many of Meeteetse businesses. You don’t have to be present to win a gun.
Sunday will be the last chance at the big prize fish, and then the weekend will wrap up with a donation chili dinner.
“You won’t want to miss this chance to tell your best fishing story of the weekend, get something at the silent auction or get drawn for the raffle,” Fremlin said.
Dozens of businesses throughout the Big Horn Basin have donated prizes for the raffle and silent auction. This isn’t just an event, it’s memories waiting to happen for the entire family, she said.
