Thanksgiving dinner set for Nov. 28 at fairgrounds
For the 14th consecutive year, friends, neighbors, families and strangers will gather to enjoy turkey and all the trimmings at the Community Thanksgiving Dinner in Powell. The holiday meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 28, at the Park County Fairgrounds multi-purpose building.
The community dinner is open to everyone, said Steve Martin, coordinator for this year’s event.
“It’s for anyone who wants to have a warm meal on Thanksgiving,” Martin said. “Anyone is welcome to eat there. We’ll have gobs of food.”
In the past, people mistakenly have seen the dinner as catering only to low-income residents. That’s not at all the case, he said. Organizers encourage anyone who is not participating in a private family gathering to join the Thanksgiving meal.
Take-out meals also will be delivered for folks who can’t make it to the fairgrounds. Last year, organizers served more than 350 people, and expect hundreds again this year.
The meal is free. Oftentimes, folks want to pay for the dinner, and free-will donations are accepted.
“That money goes into the community,” Martin said. In previous years, donations collected at the meal have gone toward the Christmas Basket Program and Heart Mountain Volunteer Medical Clinic.
Continuing cooperation and dedication from local churches and individuals make the dinner possible each year, Martin said.
“It truly is a community effort, and we appreciate all the people who help,” Martin said.
Volunteers enjoy working together and there’s a strong camaraderie, he said.
“It’s not work for a lot of people. It’s fun,” Martin said.
Residents can still volunteer to help prepare the meal or serve food on Thanksgiving.
“We take everyone who wants to help — there’s always something that needs to be done,” Martin said.
Prep work begins Wednesday at the fairgrounds. On Wednesday, the Powell Ministerial Association will host a Community Thanksgiving Eve service at the fairgrounds at 7 p.m. All are welcome, said Pastor Kevin Piscator, president of the association.
